Tasting Notes

Tasting notes
FINE+RARE, Nov 2021

This 1927 Very Old Tawny Port comes from the oldest wine estate in Portugal – Real Companhia Velha, founded in 1756. The 1927 was released in 2021 to celebrate the 265th anniversary of the estate and was awarded an impressive 98 points from Decanter magazine in a review of the finest Ports. The wine has a deep, tawny colour with a powerful, aromatic intensity. The old oak, wood polish and rich rancio aromas are interspersed with opulent, boozy Christmas cake, marzipan, dried citrus peel and sandalwood notes. The palate has fantastic viscosity, which is perhaps not that surprising for the wine’s age, but the amazing acidity that backs it up is. For a 94-year-old wine, the vibrancy is staggering. The palate is packed with flavour and beautifully integrated with dense bursts of sultanas, molasses, dried figs, macadamia nuts and toffee notes. It is so full of energy.

Very racy yet very graceful, with a range of date, bitter almond, green tea, hazelnut husk and toasted white sesame notes that are remarkably defined and persistent through the very long, tightly focused finish. Delivers terrific underlying tension throughout. Drink now. 37 cases made, 3 cases imported.

A spectacular year for Port: undoubtedly one of the best of the 20th century. The 1927 is one of three very old tawnies being released to celebrate the 265th anniversary of RCV’s founding in September 1756 (the others are from 1908 and 1900). Red mahogany in hue, this has wonderfully lifted, delicate aromas, floral with an underlying hint of toast; sumptuously rich and sweet with crystallised fruit, a touch of smooth butterscotch and a hint of spice and ginger, long and still remarkably lithe on the finish. Testament to an outstanding year.

RS 170 g/l, TA 7.29 g/l, pH 3.42. Bright greenish tawny colour with a pale rim. Strong rancio on the nose. And beautifully refreshing with just a little cheesiness and an utterly clean finish. Maybe the alcohol peeks out a bit at the end but the finish is delightfully dry and appetising.

Real Companhia Velha

Real Companhia Velha is the oldest wine company in Portugal, founded in 1756. It was initially entrusted with maintaining the quality and purity of Port wines coming from the Douro after counterfeiting and adulteration had discredited the region, leading to a significant drop in exports.
