Forget Mateus Rosé and Vinho Verde, the fortified wines of the Douro Valley have long been Portugal’s most successful wine export. Since the signing of the Methuen treaty in 1703, which assured a ready market for British textiles in Portugal in return for preferential tax rates on Portuguese wine, Port has flowed into the UK on favourable terms.
