Tasting Notes
Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2009 La Romanée Grand Cru is going from strength to strength. It has a clear dark garnet colour. The nose is exquisite, perhaps having dispensed with just some of its nascent richness since I last tasted it in 2011, armed with bewitching wild strawberry, raspberry coulis scents that crescendo. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, beautifully balanced with that tincture of dried blood extant. There is real finesse and poise embroidered in this La Romanée that knows that sometimes less is more. Jun 2015, www.robertparker.com

Initially a mild touch of reduction mutes the nose but some aggressive swirling quickly releases a kaleidoscopically broad range of spice nuances that add real breadth to the ultra-elegant, ripe and quite pure aromas of red pinot, plum and cassis that precede the rich, full and silky medium-bodied flavors that are discreet yet powerful and superbly persistent. This is an exceptionally stylish and classy wine that is supported by ultra-fine tannins and the hallmark finishing austerity. While the '09 La Romanée is essentially a wine of finesse it doesn't mean that it isn't built to age because it more assuredly is, indeed it will require at least 20 years to arrive at its peak. Wine of the Month June 2017. The La Romanee 2009 has been backward and slightly grumpy since the bottling – but now it’s really starting to show. The nose is offering layers of red and dark fruit, a vibrant spiciness and a intense minerality. On the palate intense layers of fruit – generous and almost velvet before the intense minerality takes over in the long and intense finish. Will need to check on the other 2009s from the estate.
