Tasting Notes
San Giusto a Rentennano’s Chianti Classico is astounding value, year in, year out. It’s fine-boned, open and fresh – offering a straightforward yet satisfying profile that reveals complexity with time. Sandy tannins frame the cherry fruit, with mineral, chalky acidity, complemented by savoury, herbal and bloody, iron notes that fill the long finish. Made with fruit from the first pass of the vineyard, it's 95% Sangiovese with 5% Canaiolo to make it more approachable in youth. It spends almost a year in old oak.

The organic San Giusto a Rentennano 2022 Chianti Classico offers dark fruit with crunchy cherry and a hint of rosemary twig that comes from the grapes and the skins. These qualities give the wine a balanced primary approach in which fruit integrity is front and center. The bouquet is bright and well-dosed in terms of its immediate power and accessibility. This is one of the vintage's best expressions at this price point.
The sumptuous 2022 Chianti Classico is a bold, heady wine. A rush of dark cherry, plum, new leather, spice and tobacco races across the palate. As good as the 2022 is, it will be even better after a few years in bottle, once some of the baby fat melts away. The San Giusto Chianti Classico has an exceptional track record for ageability. I expect that will continue here.
San Giusto a Rentennano’s 32 hectares are spread throughout the sunlit southern tip of Gaiole in an area called Monti. Here, the soil alternates between marine sand and limestone-rich Alberese. Crafted from a first selection of all 30 plots, the annata is profuse in expression, and it's easy to get lost in nuances of spiced cherry, fennel and sundried tomato. Whiffs of coffee and plum blossom join in. Expansive though not heavy, the palate is laden with luscious dark plum and cherry. There is an obvious ripeness, yet it tightens up with each sip. Compact, layered tannins have a subtle chalky fee, and it finishes with its signature refreshing bitter orange twist.
