Tasting Notes

Tasting notes
FINE+RARE, Sep 2023

New to the range this year, there are just three barrels of this Premier Cru, a south-facing, calcareous site that overlooks the village. Alvina’s fruit comes from the lower section of the vineyard. It was fascinating tasting this both in July and again this month, and seeing how the wine has gained in weight and complexity during élevage. This is fresh and flinty with lean minerality and crisp white peach driving the long palate. There’s a delicious creaminess that brings texture, a pleasing counterpoint to the wine’s tautness. The finish is long, expressive and mineral. Three barrels were produced, one of which was new. The 2022 labels are one-offs, including a dedication to their son Pâris, who was born on 1st January 2022.

A layered nose features notes of mineral reduction, petrol, acacia and a hint of grated lemon zest. The sleek, caressing and attractively textured middle weight flavors flash an appealing stoniness that adds a sense of lift to the notably dry and inviting but not really austere finale that could also use better depth. The grapes for this lush St-Aubin offering were sourced from the south-facing slopes of En Créot, which lie near the village of Gamay. Pernot and her husband have crafted a luxuriously delightful wine with ripe apple and apricot fruit aromas, hints of cream and spice, and a suggestion of smoke. The texture is dense and lush, but the acidity balances the wine, and the flavours linger pleasantly on the palate. This wine is a new offering for them this year; it should open soon after release and provide years of drinking pleasure.

The 2022 Saint-Aubin En Creots 1er Cru is more precise than the Les Combes with hints of lemon curd, peach skin and Mirabelle, an underlying mineralité coming through with time. The palate is well-balanced but not the most intense and concentrated. It’s more an elegant, even "airy" Saint-Aubin that should be perfect for drinking over the next 6-8 years
