2021 La Conseillante

Tasting Notes
La Conseillante is a great success in 2021, particularly with all things considered climate-wise. Their bravery in cutting yields right down, a huge amount of selection at harvest and picking their Cabernet Franc very late has produced a delicious wine. It is beautifully scented with peony, peppery spice, incense and violets. The moderate structure and concentration remains very juicy, rounded and supple with a good creaminess on the mid-palate. The wine has a really noticeable long finish. Impressive. The wine will be aged in 70% new oak, 23% one-year-old barrels and 3% amphora. Blend: 85% merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc

The 2021 Château La Conseillante showed beautifully, and while it's not going to match the all-time greats here, it's a quintessential, elegant, seamless Pomerol in the making. Revealing a deep purple hue as well as a spectacular nose of pure cassis, ripe tobacco, damp earth, and ample floral nuances, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. It's a remarkable effort in this challenging vintage. The blend is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, still aging in 70% new barrels, that hit 13.3% alcohol and a pH of 3.6.
The 2021 is a super-classic La Conseillante the likes of which has not been made here in a very long time. A Pomerol of vibrancy and tension, the 2021 bristles with energy from start to finish. All the elements are so well-balanced. Aromatic and delineated, with terrific drive, the 2021 is so impressive in the early going. Dried herbs, licorice, mocha, cassis and blackberry open beautifully. The 70% new oak is already nicely integrated. To be sure, the 2021 is nervy and taut, as most wines are in this vintage. But it's all there.
Lovely, balanced and linear with seamless, fine tannins that are soft and creamy. Medium-bodied. Very attractive berry, light walnut and violet character. Long finish.
