Tasting Notes
The 2021 Pinot Noir has lovely whole-bunch fruit character, beautifully integrating with the pristine primary fruit flavours – a perfect blend of herbal notes, perfumed scented rose petal and bright red berries. It has a glycerol mid palate richness typical of top quality new world Pinot but with a bright acid backbone and earthy, savoury tone more typical of Burgundy. The combination is fantastic.
The 2021 Los Parientes is easily the best Pinot Noir Baettig has made at the estate so far and a real jump up in quality from 2020 and 2019. The nose has great fruit clarity with rich, ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit aromas. The grilled herbal notes sit beautifully in the background, adding depth and complexity to the aromas. The whole-bunch is also better integrated on the palate, bringing lots of texture, matched by vibrant acidity and saline notes on the finish. It reminds me of a village Morey-Saint-Denis from a ripe vintage in its fruit profile with earthy, blackberry coulis fruit. The wine certainly has a more European/cool-climate edge to it.
For this cooler vintage, Francisco opted to reduce the portion of whole-bunch fermentation a little. The wine is bright, crunchy and pure, with a lovely restraint from the extended growing season. Floral tones (rose, violet) sit alongside crunchy red fruit, leading to a palate of effortless purity and length. Vibrant, mouth-wateringly fresh with an earthy, saline finish and very fine tannins. Aged for 10 months in 10% new oak. Production: 13,400 bottles

The 2021 Pinot Noir Vino de Viñedo Los Parientes, from Malleco, Traiguén, was aged for 9 months in 13% new barrels. Intense purple in the glass. The clear, full, alluring aromas include sweetbriar, red fruit, sour cherry, elderberry and hints of earth and mushrooms. Fluid with a terse texture, fine-grained tannins that keep things compact, and a little grip; the base is formed by the elegant freshness before the lengthy finish and elderberry aftertaste. A pure, delicate wine.
There is a melted chocolate-crust character that binds well with the wild strawberries, plums, roses, wild herbs, white pepper and stemmy accents. This is bright and muscular, charged with seamless tannins. Very unique and powerful pinot, but juicy and caressing, too. Drink after 2024.
Denser and more closed than the 2022 release, this is a wine that reflects its volcanic and red soil origins. Firm structured and serious, it's more Pommard than Chambolle-Musigny perhaps, with black cherry, plum and raspberry fruit and some tannic backbone. Needs time.
