FINE+RARE, Sep 2020

Colombian rum brand Dictador has emerged as arguably the most innovative producer – with a range of extra-aged rums that have fast become favourites of spirits connoisseurs around the world. Owning significantly aged stock is a luxury which few can afford. But, since Dictador was founded in 1913, it has built up unrivalled stocks of aged rum, barrels that bide their time in the company’s Cartagena warehouses. The “2 Masters” is a series of limited-edition collaborations between Dictador and other renowned wine and spirits producers around the world. Dictador’s Master Blender Hernán Parra selects aged casks, which are then shipped to the second “master” – who transfers the spirit to casks that previously held their spirit/wine for an extended period of finishing. The latest release is a collaboration with Kentucky whiskey 1792 Barton (winner of the World Whisky of the Year in Jim Murray’s 2020 Whisky Bible). Aged rum from Dictador (ranging between 36 and 44 years old) was finished in four different ex-Bourbon casks. We have chosen the Wheated Bourbon Cask – a mash bill and style synonymous with Pappy Van Winkle which is – alongside 1792 Barton – created at the distillery.
