Tasting Notes
Boillot’s Puligny Montrachet Clos de la Mouchere is as classic as a Puligny Premier Cru can be – entirely representative of this special monopole site, with its old vines and varied clay and limestone soils – a powerful wine with incredible complexity and concentration that carries the lean, razor-sharp and mineral style for which Boillot is famous beautifully. Clos de la Mouchère appears right at the top of any score board in the company of some of the best white Grand Crus of Burgundy. The 2018 vintage is a particularly fine expression. For Allen Meadows, only three white wines scored higher in this vintage - all Grand Crus and two of them from Henri Boillot! In the Wine Advocate, it matches or outscores seven out of the nine Montrachet Grand Crus reviewed in 2018. The style of the 2018 vintage means that the Mouchere is just as pure and terroir transparent, with its crystal clear minerality, as ever, but with added weight and opulence and the promise to become an especially dense, rich and complex Mouchere in time. That said, it is already drinking beautifully now. Allen Meadows has testified that it “is already wonderfully harmonious” and whilst it will certainly reward cellaring, trying this beauty in its youth will be sure to delight fans of fresher, younger styles of white Burgundy. Pure minerality on the nose, it offers an amazing aromatic scope, with some delicate notes of lemon zest and mandarine, underlying a floral bouquet with hints of lilies of the valley. On the palate a very dense and rich mouthfeel, giving a full picture of this spectacular terroir, very elegant and refined expression. A touch of fresh almonds, enhancing a precise acidity, that appears in all the whites from Henri Boillot in this vintage. We had very high expectations of the 2018 Henri Boillot Clos de la Mouchère, and it delivers.

Boillot's emblematic 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère has turned out brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, hazelnut, dried white flowers, citrus oil, blanched almonds and smoke. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, searing levels of extract and a long, mineral finish.
A whiff of matchstick is present on the elegant and highly restrained aromas of acacia blossom, spice, white orchard fruit and a hint of Asian-style tea. There is excellent volume and minerality to the strikingly textured medium-bodied flavors that display outstanding complexity on the balanced, dry and impressively persistent finish. This is one very classy wine that is already wonderfully harmonious.
