Tasting Notes
Clos Saint Jean was our pick of the line-up at Au Pied du Mont Chauve this year – and is well worth seeking out. The Picard family has 0.6 hectares in this Premier Cru. The clay soils are rich in iron, producing a powerful, broader style of Chardonnay that ages beautifully. In 2020 it is both rich and mineral. The perfumed nose brings exotic notes of wild peach and mandarin, but also has a floral character and elegant spice tones. The vibrant and fleshy palate is driven by well-balanced acidity and minerality. The powerfully dense mid-palate kicks in straightaway though, hinting at the wine’s potential. The long finish is elegant, nicely mouth-coating and persistent. It’s worth cellaring this for five years to enjoy its full character, but it will age for a good 15 years.
About the producer
Au Pied du Mont Chauve is one of the Picard family's labels. The estate produces brilliant-value Burgundy and is one of few producers able to hold back wine for later release.
