Tasting Notes
This single malt whisky is one of the oldest Macallan casks we’ve ever seen on the market. Distilled in 1986, the spirit has spent 33 years gently maturing in a first-fill ex-Oloroso Sherry cask. The result is extraordinary: a Speyside malt of outstanding depth and complexity. Intense and viscous, it is full of sweet spice, coffee and tarte tatin, driving to a long Oloroso-laced finish. This is an exclusive collaboration between FINE+RARE and the bottler – the East Asia Whisky Co., which is fast making a name for itself after only three releases. One of the bottler’s “Relic Releases”, the whisky comes in an individually numbered Glencairn crystal decanter and engraved cocobolo rosewood box. With only 90 bottles released globally, this is a true “unicorn”. After an astonishing 33 years in a first-fill Oloroso Sherry cask, this Macallan is outrageously good. While the angels took their share, the whisky has concentrated, developing a luxurious viscosity with layers of sweet baking spice, dark chocolate, coffee beans and a sweet-sour bite of caramelised apple – think tarte tatin. The finish is seemingly never-ending, revealing the cask’s origins with an Oloroso nuttiness and notes of cinnamon and clove.
