Tasting Notes
It’s a significant release from the most decorated Rye Whiskey maker in the world. At 18 years old, it is the oldest expression to date. Comprised of an experimental grain recipe of 79% rye, 15% malted rye, and 6% malted barley, uniquely, it showcases the bygone practice of malting rye in whiskey production. The combination of extended aging and a unique mash bill has delivered heightened complexity and a harmony that spans the flavour spectrum. The malted rye adds a soft, floral and earthy profile to the bold peppery spice of the rye and rich, sweet toasted notes from the malted barley. WhistlePig’s DNA is built on this kind of innovation and is testament to the vision of Dave Pickerell, who built WhistlePig in pursuit of crafting the world’s finest and most interesting Rye Whiskeys. F+R were fortunate to receive a sneak peak and sampling of this release in July. We can emphatically say the long awaited experiment is a complete success. This stunningly presented 18YO not only enhances the WhistlePig portfolio, but the whisk(e)y category as a whole. Simply put, its one of the best sipping spirits we’ve enjoyed this year.
