Tasting Notes
We have been championing Grimaldi’s wines ever since we first encountered them on a trip to Piedmont and were stunned by the quality. Whilst Ferruccio Grimaldi, the sublimely talented man behind the Giacomo Grimaldi estate, makes three amazing Barolos, one of our favourite discoveries of all his wines has been his Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore. Valmaggiore is a small, steep vineyard in the town of Vezza d'Alba in the heart of Roero. Outside of Barolo, Ferruccio is passionate about the unique Roero terroir. With its sandstone soils, the Nebbiolo grape expresses a particularly fine and elegant quality here - a more ethereal take on the sensationally aromatic variety. The 2017 vintage produced a perfect example, with wonderfully expressive fruit, beautiful perfume and elegant texture. As with all his wines, Ferruccio commits meticulous attention to detail to make this wine, resulting in a purity and precision that belies its price tag. Ferruccio Grimaldi proves again and again that with stunning terroir and sensitive winemaking, great wine does not need to be expensive. At just over £10 a bottle in bond, the 2017 Nebbiolo is an absolute steal. For those who love Piedmont’s elegant and graceful wines, this is an outstanding buy. "Delicate yet intense, with bright perfume of amazingly pure red fruit, sweet juicy cherries, raspberries, wild strawberries, dark liquorice, dried herbs and rose petals, and a touch of orange peel. The texture is wonderfully polished and graceful, with an ethereal quality to the persistent finish.
