Tasting Notes
Au Closeau is one of those beautifully positioned vineyards, nestled underneath one of the top Grand Cru sites in the Cote d’Or. It sits directly under Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, 280 metres up the hillside, on rocky clay soils. This single site cuvee provides close to Grand Cru quality at a fraction of the price, representing one of the best value Premier Cru available on the market. A single expression of this site is a rarity even for Burgundy, since most producers’ land holdings in this vineyard are too small to be able to bottle under one cuvee. As far as we are aware, only one other producer bottles their wine as single vineyard, providing only two authentic insights into the terroir of these well-positioned vines. Louis Jadot produce every single one of their cuvees in the same way with the same extraction and oak treatments (30 -35% new oak) from Village to Grand Cru in order that the terroir profile specific to each vineyard shines through, creating individual expressions in each and every one of their wines. Jadot is one of the most consistent negociants in Burgundy. A House that has managed to straddle both the entry level and fine wine market, whilst retaining respect in both. At entry level, they offer tremendous consistency at a price point rarely found in Burgundy. At the top end, with their Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites, their wines sit comfortably alongside other top producers of these ‘hallowed ground’ sites. World exclusive, single barrel produced. Soft, bright ruby in colour. Captivating, fragrant nose – blueberry, fleshy plum, dark red fruit profile. Ripe and glossy, lovely sweetness to the fruit. Perfume, with hint of sweet spice. Supple, svelte mouthfeel already, tannins are present and will need some time to melt in properly, but they are ripe and fine, and coupled with the high acidity and excellent level of sweet fruit and concentration, this should age beautifully. Bright blueberry finish. This stand-out, classic Gevrey, from this tiny but superb piece of terroir, really delivers. Without a doubt one to pick up on release, as given the tiny volumes produced – will certainly be more challenging to find moving forward. Very good indeed.
