Tasting Notes
If there is one must-have Irish whiskey, for me it is Redbreast 21 Year Old. Leading the way in the Irish whiskey renaissance, it has won a host of awards and been described as "one of the world’s most beautiful and iconic whiskeys without doubt" by Jim Murray, who scored it a massive 97 points in his 2019 Whisky Bible and ranked it as his Irish whiskey of the year and his second finest whisky in the world. Redbreast fits into the rather niche category of Irish pot still whiskey. A style, in part, born out of a response to the British Crown’s 1792 attempt to increase tax revenue by imposing higher taxes on the use of malted barley in the production of single malt. This Irish pot still whiskey uses both malted and un-malted barley, creating a unique and memorable style that has become synonymous with Redbreast and Irish Whiskey. One consequence of its success is that it has become increasingly difficult to secure an allocation of Redbreast. The 21 Year Old is the oldest expression in the Redbreast core range and therefore the stocks reserved for this premium release are limited.
