Domaine Pascal Cotat

The other Cotat, Pascal Cotat, is cousin to the legendary François Cotat. The original family domaine was divided between them in 1998, and Pascal Cotat works many of the same vineyards, producing fine – if not quite as prized – Sancerre.

The Cotat family has been making wine in Sancerre, originally in Chavignol, since the 1940s. When brothers Francis and Paul retired in 1998, their respective sons – cousins François and Pascal inherited the domaine and divided the vineyards to establish their own estates. François stayed in the original Chavignol cellar and making wine under the Domaine François Cotat name, which has become the sought-after estate in Sancerre.

Pascal moved to the town of Sancerre, retaining 2.5 hectares of vineyard, with plots in Chavignol’s famous Monts Damnés and La Grande Côte (in Amigny). Like his cousin, Pascal favours low yields, late-harvesting and old oak for the vinification, producing plush and creamy wines. The wines are very good, if not holding quite the same allure as those of François Cotat.
