Tasting Notes

Tasting notes
Score 94/100 · Georgie Hindle, Decanter, May 2023

Notes of coffee, tobacco, figs, cinnamon, violets and bramble fruits on the nose - smells quite opulent and inviting. Sleek and super smooth on the palate with a crystalline texture to the ripe fruit flavours. This has concentration but also such bite giving a thrilling sensation on the palate with hints of salinity and graphite that give freshness and nuance. Intentional and determined, this has clear power but delivered with such a joyful juiciness that makes it so appealing and so drinkable. A long finish leaves a lasting impression. Wonderful stuff.

This family estate located in the northern part of the Médoc appears to have turned out a terrific 2022 Clos Manou. Based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it has a beautifully pure nose of cassis and black cherry fruits that are supported by notes of flowers and leafy herbs. This elegant, medium-bodied Médoc has fine tannins, notable balance, and outstanding length. It's a little gem of a wine that punches well above its humble status.

As usual, Stephane Dief has produced a captivating wine from this over-performing estate nestled far in the northern Médoc, "where the busses don't run". The 2022 Clos Manou is a blend of 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.5% Petit Verdot and a smattering of Cabernet Franc. It stands out for its aromas of cassis, dark berries and plums mingled with peonies, violets and a subtle hint of cigar box. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, fleshy mouthfeel girdled by racy acids, concluding with a long, vibrant finish.

No secret that I am a fan of this small production, high quality estate in the Médoc region, owned by Françoise and Stéphane Dief. Once again here it shows you why. This is absolutely staying in the lines of 2022 in terms of its full-on inky colour, but there are vibrant violet edges, and this feels sleek but restrained. A real standout, leaning into the vintage with its clearly ripe dark fruits and plush chocolate and liquorice lacing, but never feeling over the top. A buy.

Clos Manou

Clos Manou is one of Bordeaux’s most under-rated addresses. The tiny estate is in the northern reaches of the Médoc, but produces wine that puts some Classed Growths to shame.
