Matt Kramer of Wine Spectator picked out the category of cru Beaujolais as his Wines of the Year for 2016, saying: “No other single wine region in the world at this moment offers quite such a distinction of place-powerful savor and pocketbook value. In the past year, I reached for these wines more than any others. That is why cru Beaujolais are my Wines of the Year… But make no mistake – this confluence of high quality allied with relatively low pricing won’t last… We’re in a ‘get it while you can’ moment.” A view echoed by Neal Martin, who says Beaujolais offers: “an enormous amount of pleasure at prices that ensure they remain some of the greatest value wines on the planet.”

One of the producers that Matt Kramer highlighted was Lafarge-Vial. According to Robert Parker “Lafarge has been a master for three decades of unshowy yet consistently delicious, profound Volnay.” And their application of those iconic Burgundian winemaking skills in Fleurie met with critical acclaim for their first vintage in 2014. Josh Raynolds noted the producer’s Côte d’Or lineage shows stronglyin their biodynamic Gamay and Jancis Robinson called them “fascinating”, “polished” and “charming”. Allen Meadows and John Gilman concurred scoring all of Lafarge-Vial’s 2014s in the 90s.

On 2015, Josh Raynolds said that this vintage: “stands out from the two preceding vintages for the sheer heft and power of the wines.” Neal Martin and Julia Harding MW agree, the former saying that there is a bevy of great Beaujolais in 2015 and the latter praising the excellent quality/price ratio.” In fact 2015 is the second highest rated vintage in the last ten years for Beaujolais according to Wine Spectator.

Although yet to be scored by the critics, these wines seriously impressed the FINE+RARE team on a recent visit to taste them with Frédéric Lafarge…
