Col d’Orcia, meaning othe hill overlooking the Orcia river, is located at the southern edge of the Brunello di Montalcino geographical limits. It is the largest organic farm in Tuscany, having gained the status back in 2010. Since then, these organic grapes are grown on the highest slopes of the property and the ageing process of three years takes place in large Slavonian oak barrels.

BB: Still a touch reticent on the nose, yet elegant and spicy, with red fruit embellished by notes of tobacco leaf and dried herbs. Even, vertical and refined on the palate, with a clean, inviting finish.

MG: Fragrant berry aromas with hints of tarragon and black pepper, ceding to a rounded palate with full, chunky fruit, while lithe tannins should ensure a promising future.

SH: Soft, creamy sweet-oak spice aromas lead to a powerful yet uniform palate of cherry fruit, with a long-lingering finish. Seems young at present, but all the elements complement each other beautifully.

Oct 2017, Bruno Mesa, Michael Garner & Susan Hulme MW, www.decanter.com, Drink: 2020-2029
Bright and freshly fruity with plum, cherry and walnut undertones. Medium to full body and firm and silky tannins. Really beautiful and bright. One of the best wines in years from here. Drink or hold. Dec 2016, www.jamessuckling.com
Macerated cherry and plum flavors mingle with iron, meat, eucalyptus and tobacco flavors in this dense, beefy red. Compact, leaving a bitter almond note on the finish, yet staying fresh. 16,000 cases made. Jun 2017, www.winespectator.com, Drink: 2020-2032
17+ points. Tasted blind. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Shy, yet rich cherry nose. A little reluctant on the palate, too, with juicy but closed cherry fruit. Fragrant and elegant and with an imposing, tannic structure, making the finish a little tough for the moment and demanding time. Undeniably elegant. Jan 2017, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2018-2028
Sant'Angelo in Colle. Transparent ruby. Interesting, racy, minerally wine that is much more refreshing than many a previous vintage. Some charred-fruit sensation but lots to like. Fine tannins in abundance. Mar 2017, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2020-2028
The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino offers an authentic interpretation of this celebrated appellation in southern Tuscany. The bouquet is rich and sophisticated with candied cherry, dried currant and spice. I tasted this wine very soon after its commercial release and it took a little while open. It showed a point of reduction well. Give the glass a few vigorous swirls and the wine begins to peel back. Varietal aromas of moist earth, button mushroom, grilled herb and blue flower ultimately add to the wine's timid complexity. Give this wine two or three years to flesh out.
