The latest release from what many consider to be Spain’s First Growth is Vega Sicilia’s flagship Único 2005, hailing from an “outstanding” vintage according to Wine Advocate. The 2005 has been held back and released after 2007 and 2008, as it is in Luis Gutierrez’s words: “more powerful and [will] require/benefit from some time in bottle.”
Neal Martin, who has previously said that “Único brings a smile to your face”, was clearly impressed again, awarding it 95 points and saying “2005 looks set to be a wonderful Único.”
He went on to complement its “Burgundy-like texture”, saying that “this is a very feminine Único” and it “should be more approachable than the 2004.”
Vega Sicilia changed technical director in 2015 from the incredibly well-respected and long-serving Xavier Ausás to the relatively unknown Gonzalo Iturriaga. Although we are confident that the outstanding quality level will be maintained, it is likely that availability of high-scoring wines like this one, the 2004 (“truly spectacular” – Luis Gutierrez) and the 2008 (“lighter version… a triumph for the vintage” – Luis Gutierrez) will be swept up by collectors as Ausás' last few vintages.
