2012 Brunello di Montalcino Il Poggione

Reaffirming its reputation as home to “one of the most fairly priced, ageworthy wines on the planet” (Galloni), Il Poggione produced a spectacularly good 2012 Brunello di Montalcino. For the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner this 95+ point scorer is “one of the year’s best Brunellos” and yet, despite the undoubted brilliance in the bottle, it remains superb value.

As Larner notes below, “Il Poggione is a Brunello superstar and a vintage like this reveals every reason why that affirmation is true”. A warm year could have resulted in an unbalanced or flabby wine, instead they produced a Brunello where the vibrant and rich fruit is balanced by fresh acidity. It’s the absolute hallmark of great winemaking and shows just why this winery is so highly-revered.

Prices remain exceptionally reasonable in spite of the world-class quality and increased demand for Brunello from connoisseurs across the globe. There are few reds that can touch this for sheer value for money, making it one to stock up on and enjoy over the course of its long drinking window.

Walnuts and cedar with plums and hints of milk chocolate. Always subtle. Medium body, a solid core of fruit and medium-chewy tannins. Center palate of cherry fruit. Give it a year or two to soften. Nov 2016, www.jamessuckling.com

Il Poggione is a Brunello superstar and a vintage like this reveals every reason why that affirmation is true. From the second the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino pours into the glass, you know you are in for something special. The wine is darkly saturated and rich in appearance. Absent are those slightly amber or browning hues you often get with Sangiovese in a hot vintage. Nor does the wine show flat or tired characteristics. Instead, the quality of fruit is vibrant and rich. This is a healthy, generous and exuberant Brunello with dark density and succulent fruit flavors that are followed by integrated spice and tobacco. The balance is impressive and one thing you get here is fresh acidity. This is not to be underestimated, because the acidity quota in the 2012 vintage across the appellation is not as high or evident as usual. This is one of the year's best Brunellos. Good full red. Medicinal red cherry, raspberry, sweet spices and mint on the fresh, precise nose. Bright and sweet, with a penetrating, austere quality to its flavors of red fruits, minerals and medicinal herbs. Harmonious acidity nicely frames the pure, long, youthfully tight finish. Lovely young Brunello that will repay cellaring. Mar 2017, www.vinous.com, Drink: 2025-2038

Tenuta Il Poggione is an Italian wine producer based in Montalcino, Tuscany. The winery is considered one of the major producers of Brunello di Montalcino with a total of 600 hectares of land in which 125 are devoted to vineyards. The estate’s philosophy is that diversified agriculture is essential to the well-being of their vineyards and for this reason the estate devotes the balance of their land to olive groves, woodlands and their family farm. Their Sangiovese vines, planted in 1964, are the potentially the oldest in Montalcino. The family-owned winery was purchased in 1890 and is now run by Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi, who combine tradition with progressive equipment and techniques to make a vibrant style of Brunello. In the vineyards, the vines are worked by hand and careful berry by berry selection is carried out during harvest. In the winery, only native yeast is used where wines are fermented in stainless steel and aged in only French oak (mostly untoasted) before being bottled unfiltered. The resulting wines are structured and powerful yet maintain the elegance associated with traditional Brunello di Montalcino.
